Jim is an awfully good foil for Tom. Many of the qualities are opposites and that is clearly seen in the play. When time goes on to tell his mother that he is found a suitor for his sister his mother asked to many questions about whether he is a good man, he drinks, what he does, and what he plans to do. Lauren Tom describes Jim you begin to see opposites pointed out. Where Tom spends time at the movies, Jim attends night school. Tom’s mother points out that if Tom had more “get up” that he would have a more fairly responsible job like Jim. Tom points out that Jim makes time for self-improvement and that he dreams of going into radio engineering a public speaking. In the beginning of the play Amanda points out that she is aware that Tom wants to leave for the Merchant Marine but that he most stay at the warehouse until his sister is married and she can be supported by her husband.
not killing myself is a personal achievement but you cant really brag about that at dinner parties
